Prenatal Chiropractic

Dr. Samantha Boyd specializes in prenatal chiropractic care. She is certified in the Webster Technique which is the main technique used to provide care for pregnant women.  As a women goes through her pregnancy journey her body undergoes additional stress from the changes in her body including certain hormones and the growth of the baby.  Pregnancy chiropractic supports optimal pelvic and spinal alignment and nervous system balance.  It focuses on specific misalignments and certain ligaments and muscles that are commonly and directly affected by pregnancy.  Common conditions include back pain, sciatica, pubic pain, hip pain, and round ligament pain.  Our goal is to make your pregnancy more comfortable and enjoyable.  Also, getting adjusted though out your pregnancy can help ease labor and delivery.  When the pelvis is in proper alignment it creates the environment and space for the baby to get into the correct position for delivery.  This can also decrease labor times.

Postpartum Chiropractic

The postpartum period is a time of profound healing and restoration.  Now that the additional stress from pregnancy is removed from the body we can focus on healing through restoring proper alignment and proper body mechanics.  This will help resolve any residual pain or discomfort from pregnancy.  It can also help optimize nervous system function and mood regulation.  Postpartum chiropractic can ultimately help your body transition from carrying your baby to caring for your baby.  Now that you are caring for your baby other forms of stress are introduced into your body through what is required to nurture them. This includes holding your baby, feeding your baby, and staying up with your baby at night when they need you. Chiropractic care will help you maintain your alignment through your postpartum journey so that you are able to enjoy caring for your baby without being distracted by your own discomfort.  Our gentle postpartum care is tailored to meet your body’s needs so that we are able to support you at different stages during your postpartum journey.

Webster Technique

The Webster Technique is the chiropractic technique that focuses on caring for women during pregnancy. It has specialized chiropractic analysis and adjustments for pregnant women.  It specifically focuses on the alignment of the sacrum which is located in your pelvis and particular pelvic muscles and ligaments, including the round ligament of the uterus.  The goal is to restore proper pelvic balance and alignment and reduce intrauterine constrain.  Proper pelvic alignment also helps create the environment for your baby to move into optimal positioning for labor and delivery.  This can result in a better labor and delivery experience including shorter labor times. Webster technique is also the technique used by chiropractors when the baby presents in the breech position.  Through proper alignment and pelvic balance we are creating the space and environment for the baby to turn themself out of the breech position.

FAQs

  • What is prenatal chiropractic?

Specialized, gentle chiropractic care that focuses on specific pelvic misalignments, muscles and ligaments that are commonly affected by pregnancy.

  • What are the benefits of prenatal chiropractic care?

Chiropractic can relieve pain and discomfort experienced during pregnancy such as back pain, sciatica, pubic pain, and hip pain.  Being aligned creates the space and environment for the baby to be in optimal positioning for labor and delivery.  This can support a smoother labor and delivery including shorter labor times.

  • When should I start prenatal chiropractic care?

You can start care at any time during your pregnancy.  In my experience the earlier you start in your pregnancy the better. Women that start earlier tend to be more comfortable for the duration of their pregnancy.

  • Will I get adjusted at my first appointment?

Yes. Your initial appointment will begin with an evaluation of your spine and pelvis. Next, we will review the findings. Then we will begin care which will consist of an adjustment along with soft tissue work.

  • How soon after birth can I receive care?

As soon as you are ready.   Especially in the first few weeks your care can be personalized to be as gentle as needed. During the postpartum period many mothers get what is called Mommy and Me appointments where both mother and baby get adjusted during the same appointment.
